Inspired by the once-ubiquitous “Kodaguide” — handheld reference cards used to determine exposure and other camera settings — this project reflects on the rules and tools that undergird popular photography. To see beyond the recommendations provided by these cards, each one is photographed individually and then meticulously dissected with a manual digital process. Painstakingly, all of the technical numbers, example images, as well as explanatory text are covered up by copying and pasting dust and scratches from the surface. The resulting compositions are then enlarged to emphasize this digital mark making in concert with a single word that remains in its original location. Each word is an oblique reference either to familiar photographic tropes — light, shadow, flowers — as well as recurrent judgments about the conditions and ambivalences of image making — normal, appropriate, correct.
